The attached chart shows the unemployment rate of the Greater Shepparton City Council Area compared to other local government areas. On average it is trending higher than the national average however it is encouraging to see a drop of 0.6 per cent.

Whilst it is never encouraging to see that Shepparton has a higher than average unemployment rate it is great to see the following initiatives recently being announced that will hopefully lead to sustainable employment outcomes:

• Rubicon Water: Currently employs 189 people, of which 171 are based in Australia, including 114 in Shepparton. The state Government is helping Rubicon undertake an expansion project worth close to $3.5 million, driving exports and generating 112 new jobs - 106 of them in the local area.

• Goulburn Valley Industry and Infrastructure Fund: A  Victorian 5 million dollar fund that will leverage new industry, investment and employment opportunities and support a strategic long term plan for the community.

• SPC Ardmona: Woolworths recently announced that they will be sourcing their entire fruit product from SPC Ardmona. This has resulted in an increase in demand for fruit in the area and will create long lasting employment opportunities.
