Many sound businesses may be failing partly due to a lack of marketing planning, according to Small Business Development Officer at Greater Shepparton Business Centre, Peter Barclay.

"In the current economic climate that has many businesses operating on tighter budgets, an effective marketing campaign can help give that competitive market advantage," said Mr Barclay.

The Business Centre will be hosting a "Marketing for Growth" workshop on Wednesday 18 July, aimed at businesses who may be experiencing difficulties with their marketing or who are looking to take their business to the next level.

"Some businesses don't understand how marketing or market research works, or they don't measure what marketing medium works most effectively for them," said Mr Barclay.

"Being innovative, and making sure that the businesses marketing strategy is embraced by the whole business team will help build and strengthen vital relationships with customers."

Ailsa Page, an Associate Fellow of the Australian Marketing Institute with over 18 years marketing experience, and who will be speaking at the workshop, says that marketing tends to be a "very big spend" for business, "which is a problem when they spend it in the wrong place," she said.

"There are so many marketing options for people unless they really understand the basic principles, it's very hard for them to make an educated decision," she said.

The workshop will cover such topics as:

  • How to identify your target market and be innovative in getting your message across
  • Tips and ideas on how to build that vital relationship with your customers
  • How to be more effective in your market research
  • Customer satisfaction drivers and how to get them to keep coming back

The seminar will be held at the Greater Shepparton Business Centre, 70 Dookie Road, Shepparton on 18 July from 6-9pm. The cost is $30 per person and bookings can be made by contacting Jo Rathjen on 03 5832 1100, by email at gsbc@shepparton.vic.gov.au or online at www.business.vic.gov.au/businessevents.
