In July, the Federal Government released a report which reviews the economic viability of a high speed rail network on the east coast of Australia. The study looks at potential routes from Brisbane southwards to Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne.

Shepparton was medium listed in a route option between Canberra and Melbourne with up to $4.9 billion in cost savings and user benefits over the base case route (Canberra-Albury-Melbourne).

Despite this, routes which include Shepparton did not make the short list of preferred routes.

Council will continue to lobby politicians to highlight the regional benefits of including Shepparton as one of the networked stations in a fast rail project. Council will also make further investigation to strengthen our supportive argument.
