Greater Shepparton City Council’s Building Branch has released figures showing the value and number of new dwelling building permits issued during 2010-11 was consistent with figures from the past seven years.

1529 permits were issued during 2010-11.

Council Economic Development Manager Geraldine Christou said the exception to this general trend was 2009-10 when more than 550 new dwelling permits were issued - an all-time high.

"This unprecedented number was a direct result of the Federal Government's First Home Buyers Grant, which ended at the end of 2010," she said.

"The cost of building works across the municipality shows a similar story with 2009-10 producing an all-time high figure of $213 million.

"Much of this was also directly attributed to the impact of the Federal Government's stimulus package, and in particular to the grants provided to schools."

She said that given the 2009-10 figures were the result of extraordinary circumstances, current figures could be viewed with optimism.

"The $185million worth of building works achieved during 2010-11 is the highest figure reported since 1999 and indicates continued growth and confidence across the region," she said.
