Greater Shepparton Lighthouse Project is raising funds to support the Mooroopna Primary School Healthy Eating Program.

The program was introduced during Term 2 because many students (80% plus) where coming to school either hungry or without something substantial to eat during the day.  This has been a major initiative of the school that has seen the upgrade of the existing canteen, installation of an industrial kitchen and employment of a full time chef.  The school canteen now provides three meals per day (lunch and two snacks) complimenting their current breakfast program and at no cost to the families.

The school is already seeing improvements:

  • Increase in school attendance;
  • Higher student engagement;
  • Students, teachers, school community and Mooroopna community have embraced the program;
  • Fruit and vegetables being consumed on a daily basis;
  • Learning table manner and how to use a knife and fork;
  • Behavioural incidents escalated to the Principal have reduced; and
  • Students displaying leadership capacity, for example assisting with the service and cleaning up

GSLP’s Early Years and Primary Table Leaders have committed to helping the school raise money towards their grocery fund.  It costs $1 per day to provide 3 x health meals to the students.  The school need $30,000 per year to keep this going.

Join the Lighthouse Project for 'A Sunday Lunch' to raise funds to keep this important program going.
