The Greater Shepparton Business Centre has been recognised as one the top six BEC from around Australia at the 2010 Business Enterprise Centres (BEC) Australia Awards for Performance that was held in Cairns on Tuesday 14 September 2010.

The Greater Shepparton Business Centre, which is one of the few BECs in Australia wholly owned and funded by its local Council, was recognised as one of Australia's best BECs in the business.gov.au Award for Best Regional BEC category.

The Business Centre's two staff, Geoff Hay and Jo Rathjen, were also nominated for individual awards.

The winners of the night were:

  • Best Regional Business Enterprise Centre (BEC) winner - Small Business Centre Great Southern, WA
  • Metropolitan BEC of the Year - St George/Sutherland Shire BEC, NSW
  • BEC Manager of the Year - Lynette Hay, Port Adelaide BEC, SA

Council's Team Leader Business and Industry Leanne Mulcahy said the Business Centre team was thrilled to be nominated for the Best Regional BEC.

"It is an outstanding achievement and great to get the recognition for all their hard work," Ms Mulcahy said.

"The Business Centre has a great team and they do a fantastic service for our local community especially in helping to develop business for our local economy.

"Council is very proud of the facility and we take every opportunity to market how we can help the business community."

The business people who nominated the centre for the national awards said they were very impressed with the high-level facilities and the supportive personal service and invaluable advice they had received.

Located at 70 New Dookie Rd, Shepparton, the Greater Shepparton BEC focuses on the incubation of new and emerging small business, as well as providing a stepping stone for home-based businesses.

The Business Centre also actively offers small business training programs through Small Business Victoria, an advisory service through the Small Business Mentoring Service, and the hire of training and meeting rooms to the wider business community.
