International Day of People with Disability aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilise support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.
This year Greater Shepparton City Council, in collaboration with the Shepparton Art Museum and Department of Transport, is delighted to announce celebrations for International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) in 2023.
On Monday 4 December, Council will host two concerts to acknowledge IDPwD. These two captivating concerts will feature Gerry’s Well Oiled Machine, a remarkable band representing a mix of neurodiversity and physical disabilities. The band members are all accomplished and award-winning songwriters and musicians who will inspire, entertain, and educate the audience. Two shows are scheduled commencing at 1.00pm and at 2.30pm, and will be held at the Shepparton Senior Citizens Centre. Tickets are available for $5.00. On Wednesday 6 December, Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) is hosting the Art for All Day. This is an inclusive and immersive artistic experience designed for individuals with intellectual, sensory, and physical disabilities. SAM's art educators, alongside local artist Kody Bothwell, will guide attendees through three workshops that will provide participants with a range of engaging art activities and provide a platform for creative expression and exploration. On Thursday 7 December, Public Transport Victoria and Council will host a Try Before You Ride event at the Shepparton Railway Station from 11.00am to 1.00pm. This event aims to boost the confidence of individuals with disabilities, parents with children, seniors, and others when using the public transport system. Attendees will have the opportunity to experience and access different transport options in a relaxed and supportive environment.
