Work on a much needed upgrade of Shepparton’s court house could start within the next two years, Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor Geoff Dobson said today.

Cr Dobson, Council CEO Phil Pearce and former Law Institute of Victoria president and Goulburn Valley Law Association member David Faram met with Victorian Attorney General Robert Clark today to reiterate the importance of the upgrade to the community.

"The court upgrade is a top priority for the Goulburn Valley and we're pleased this meeting with the Attorney General confirmed the State Government's commitment to the project," Cr Dobson said.

"He confirmed that the $200,000 scoping study the Coalition committed to in the lead up to last year's election and more recently in this year's State Budget would start in the 2011-12 financial year.

"The Attorney General indicated that he hoped that the study would be completed in time to allow for an application for funding for a multi-purpose law facility to be built on the existing law court site commencing in 2012-13.

"Council indicated we would do all we can to assist in meeting the State Government's timeframe.

Cr Dobson said a new court house had been on the drawing board for many years and it was pleasing to see the project start to take shape.

"I am very reassured by the Attorney General's approach and I am very appreciative of the time he gave to us today," he said.

"I would also like to thank local MPs Jeanette Powell and Wendy Lovell for helping to facilitate the meeting and for their help in securing this important project.

"We look forward to watching it progress and will provide any assistance we can to facilitate this much-needed improvement."
