Greater Shepparton City Council’s plans to become a regional tertiary education hub have received another boost with more student accommodation opening soon.

Council Economic Development Manager Department Geraldine Christou said Council had always recognised the importance of promoting the city’s tertiary education facilities to ensure Greater Shepparton remained a prosperous and thriving centre

"Lack of student accommodation has long been regarded as one of the barriers to the expansion of tertiary education," Ms Christou said.

"Private rental is available and is complemented by student accommodation provided by the city's tertiary institutes.

"However, affordable student accommodation is always in demand and the imminent opening of Shepparton Student Accommodation will provide more options for students considering studying here and is therefore another much-welcomed investment in tertiary education in Greater Shepparton."

Shepparton Student Accommodation is at 279 Wyndham Street, Shepparton, close to the tertiary education precinct.

The privately owned and operated facility will initially be for five students, and will eventually expand to accommodate 11 students.

The facility's business partner Vince Tassone said he had already received expressions of interest from people training in the region, particularly the hospital.

"We shouldn't have much trouble filling it as our prices are competitive and the rooms are fully furnished including internet access, so all the students need to supply is their bed linen," he said.

"At first there were a few barriers to overcome but, after working closely with Council's planning department, we are pleased with the outcomes and how supportive the Council has been."
